Frank Sinatra once sang, "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere." But how does it actually work?

New York is home to an extraordinary range of lives and financial realities — from newly arrived immigrants to those building careers, to families with generational wealth. It is also famously expensive. What do paychecks really look like here? What does it take to secure an apartment? How do people spend, save, and navigate the rhythms of daily life in a city that constantly demands more? And how do they manage not just to stay afloat, but to get ahead?

These lives emerge from a constant interplay between personal ambition and the structures of the city itself — each shaping the other. It's Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Great Gatsby coexisting: aspiration and reality, glamour and striving, people living as fully and as ambitiously as they can.

프랭크 시나트라는 노래했습니다. "이곳에서 해낼 수 있다면, 어디서든 해낼 수 있다." 그런데 실제로는 어떻게 돌아갈까요?

뉴욕은 믿기 어려울 만큼 다양한 삶과 경제적 현실이 공존하는 도시입니다 — 이제 막 이민 온 사람들부터 경력을 쌓아가는 이들, 그리고 대대로 부를 이어온 가문들까지. 동시에, 물가 비싸기로도 유명한 곳입니다. 이곳의 월급은 실제로 어떤 모습일까요? 아파트 한 채를 구하려면 무엇이 필요할까요? 끊임없이 더 많은 것을 요구하는 이 도시에서 사람들은 어떻게 쓰고, 모으고, 일상의 리듬을 이어갈까요? 그리고 어떻게 단순히 버티는 것을 넘어, 앞으로 나아갈까요?

이러한 삶들은 개인의 야망과 도시 그 자체의 구조 사이에서 끊임없이 이루어지는 상호작용 속에서 빚어집니다 — 서로가 서로를 만들어가는 관계. 〈티파니에서 아침을〉과 〈위대한 개츠비〉가 동시에 공존하는 도시입니다 — 열망과 현실, 화려함과 분투, 그리고 각자가 할 수 있는 한 가장 충실하고 야심차게 살아가는 사람들의 이야기.

New York is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Within a capitalist framework, the boundaries of ownership and rights are clearly defined — yet constantly tested, negotiated, and blurred. How do New Yorkers navigate these overlapping legal and social contracts?

Consider the everyday arenas where this plays out: securing a coveted restaurant reservation, dating, enrolling children in school, apartment hunting. The ebb and flow of neighborhoods. Cultures colliding, competing, and ultimately blending. Even the subtle — but unmistakable — negotiation of right of way between pedestrians and cars at a crosswalk.

Do we get lost in a city of countless faces? Yes, and somehow, no. For all its scale and intensity, New York is held together by something more human: a quiet bond, a shared understanding, a willingness to help. Beneath the friction, New Yorkers are often remarkably open, generous, and deeply connected. These bonds reveal themselves over time, and to those who stay long enough to see them.

뉴욕은 세계에서 가장 인구 밀도가 높은 도시 중 하나입니다. 자본주의의 틀 안에서 소유와 권리의 경계는 명확히 규정되어 있습니다 — 그러나 끊임없이 시험되고, 협상되고, 흐려지는 경계이기도 합니다. 뉴요커들은 이 겹겹이 쌓인 법적, 사회적 계약들을 어떻게 헤쳐나갈까요?

그 풍경은 일상의 장면들 속에 있습니다: 인기 있는 레스토랑의 예약을 잡는 일, 연애, 아이의 학교 입학, 아파트 구하기. 동네의 흥망성쇠. 문화들이 부딪히고, 경쟁하고, 결국 섞여 드는 모습. 그리고 횡단보도에서 보행자와 차량이 암묵적으로 — 그러나 분명하게 — 우선권을 주고받는 미묘한 순간까지.

이 수많은 얼굴들의 도시에서 우리는 길을 잃을까요? 그렇기도 하고, 어쩐지 그렇지 않기도 합니다. 이 도시의 규모와 강렬함 속에서도, 뉴욕을 지탱하는 것은 보다 인간적인 무언가입니다 — 말없이 통하는 유대, 서로에 대한 암묵적인 이해, 기꺼이 손을 내미는 마음. 표면의 마찰 아래에서, 뉴요커들은 놀라울 만큼 열려 있고, 너그럽고, 깊이 연결되어 있습니다. 그 연결은 시간 속에서, 이 도시에 오래 머무른 이들에게 서서히 모습을 드러냅니다.

Everything here is amplified. The highs are higher, the lows are lower. But how far do they really go?

This is the part that's hardest to capture on paper — you have to see it, feel it, walk through it. My hope is to give you a glimpse of that edge as we move through the city together.

I've had my share. Nights that feel pulled from The Great Gatsby: caviar bumps, seven-figure watches, private jets within reach. And on the other end: subway station elevators you'd rather not step into, the city's infamous rats, moments that are raw, unfiltered, and unmistakably real.

In between, everything else: chance encounters with celebrities, stories of rags to riches and back, moments of real inspiration, and experiences that stay with you long after. Some of these I'll share with you. Others, you'll encounter on your own, simply by being here.

This is why I find it hard to imagine living anywhere else. In New York, every time you step outside, the city has a story waiting — and it doesn't ask for permission to tell it.

저 역시 제 몫의 경험을 해왔습니다. 〈위대한 개츠비〉에서 막 튀어나온 듯한 밤들: 캐비어 범프, 수억 원대 시계, 손만 뻗으면 닿을 것 같은 프라이빗 제트. 그리고 그 반대편에는: 발을 들이고 싶지 않은 지하철역 엘리베이터, 뉴욕의 악명 높은 쥐들, 날것 그대로의 — 그러나 분명히 진짜인 — 순간들.

그 사이에는 모든 것이 있습니다: 우연히 마주치는 유명인들, 무일푼에서 부로, 그리고 다시 그 반대로 향하는 이야기들, 진짜 영감을 주는 순간들, 그리고 오래도록 마음에 남는 경험들. 그중 어떤 것은 제가 여러분께 들려드릴 것이고, 또 어떤 것은 단지 이곳에 있다는 이유만으로 여러분 스스로 만나게 될 것입니다.

제가 다른 어떤 곳에서 사는 것을 상상하기 어려운 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 뉴욕에서는, 당신이 문 밖으로 나설 때마다 이 도시는 이미 이야기 하나를 준비해두고 있습니다 — 그리고 그 이야기를 들려주기 위해, 이 도시는 당신의 허락을 구하지 않습니다.

The Wolf of Wall Street, Billions, Succession — New York's infamous finance sector draws attention and awe. But how does it actually work, and what's real? How does it trickle down to everyday life?

We can talk about the world of hedge funds, private equity, family offices, and venture capital; the lives and culture of people in finance; how these funds work and where their capital comes from; and the local and global impact of New York as the world's financial hub.

New York remains the single largest concentration of private capital on earth, and Park Avenue sits at its center. Is that sustainable? How did it come to be? Where is it all going?
